Small Press Community Rebuilds After SPD Failure

Small Press Distribution (SPD), a crucial nonprofit literary distributor for independent publishers, abruptly ceased operations on March 28, 2024. This closure followed several years of financial difficulties exacerbated by declining sales and significant losses in grant support. SPD, which served over 300 small and independent presses, faced severe budget constraints despite efforts to raise funds and reduce operating costs, including moving their inventory to facilities in Tennessee and Michigan (Publishers Global) (KQED).

The sudden shutdown of SPD has left many small presses in a precarious situation. Publishers are now scrambling to find new distribution channels for their books, which were previously handled by SPD. This disruption is expected to significantly impact the availability of independent and avant-garde literary works, as SPD played a vital role in getting these books into bookstores and libraries (Midland Paper) (Literary Hub).

In response to the crisis, organizations like the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP) are organizing emergency meetings to discuss next steps and support affected publishers. Additionally, there is a call for readers and supporters of small presses to purchase books directly from these publishers to help them survive this challenging period (Literary Hub).
